Subject: [*] Voodoo1.4 - Version control tool
This mail is to inform you that the version control tool
Voodoo is now available. Voodoo is the successor of
Revisionist and is (IMHO) the first real
version control tool for the macintosh. A lite version
of Voodoo will be distributed on a shareware basis.
The package included contains Voodoo 1.4 together with a
readme document and a manual.
Voodoo allows both variant and revision control, and it
manages not only variants and revisions of single files, but
of a whole software project (multi files, multi users,
multi variants, access rights, ...).
The tool offers a neat graphical user interface and is not only
suitable for mere source code control but can handle all
different kinds of files with amazing compression rates
(typical size of delta between arbitrary files 5% -
no matter whether the files are plain text or any other
documents - e. g. MSWord, WriteNow, Canvas, ...).
Contrary, if you try to manage non-text-files with Projector
or SCCS you will not get any space reduction.
Voodoo differs from previous source code control systems in its
orthogonal approach to version management. This means that for
every component of a project hierarchy you can not only store
its revision history but also different variants of the same
component. For a more detailed explanation I'd like to refer
you to the paper on orthogonal version management, which is
included with the application in the Voodoo package.

1. There is a control panel by Robert Polic called SCSIProbe
( now at version 3.5) which does a pretty good job of identifying
SCSI devices and whether the bus is terminated correctly. Look for
it on SUMEX. I recommend booting off a copy of the Disk Tools disk to
which SCSIProbe has been added. You may have to delete Disk First Aid
to make enough space (remember, I said "a COPY".......).
2. Even without connecting the device and without opening it, a simple test
with a cheap multi-meter (or an expensive one, if that's all you have!)
will reveal whether your device is internally terminated:
With the device power off, measure between pins 26 & 50 of the 50-contact
SCSI connector, "the narrow side" of the D-shaped ribbon-contact connector.
The measured value for an un-terminated SCSI device will be 10,000 ohms
or more, effectively an open circuit.
A device with standard passive resistor packs installed will measure
about 260 ohms plus or minus 15 ohms. A doubly-terminated device
(internal resistor packs + external terminator on the other connector)
will measure about 130 ohms (half of the normal value). Of course, in
this latter case you MUST remove one of the terminators to be correctly
configured. I make a practise of checking ALL in-coming SCSI hardware
and removing the internal SCSI packs if found. Other posters have
exhaustively explained the correct configuration for a SCSI bus. I won't
repeat that discussion here.

Note that you can use the procedure to examine a chain of SCSI devices
for correct termination: Disconnect the System SCSI cable at the first
device and make the measurement. You should only "see" one terminator
in the chain, at the far end. If you then remove it from the last
device, you should see an open or nearly-open circuit as above.
I use the same procedure for checking SCSI device chains on SUN and
VAX workstations.

Since I'm a new subscriber to AOL (but a long time reader of Info-Mac), I
thought it would be a nice idea to help out here. This past Monday
I uploaded Info-Mac v11 #144 to the Macintosh Development Forum. On
Tuesday, I was informed that the upload was NOT ACCEPTABLE for AOL.
Why?
I had inadvertently violated the rules of the AOL Thought Police - you
see Compact-Pro (obviously a perverted piece of shareware) is NOT an
acceptable format for AOL. Only the Great God Stuffit(tm) shall be allowed
in the AOL Sacred Archive. Now I've got nothing against Leonard Rosenthal,
Raymond Lau, or even Aladdin Systems, and I keep a copy of Stuffit Expander
(tm) and UnStuffit(tm) around to handle archive stored in those formats,
but I use Compact-Pro for MY archives. Since I have no desire to shell
out additional $$ for either the shareware or commercial version of
Stuffit(tm), I will give someone else the honor of uploading to AOL.
Actually, this is just one more reason why my stay at AOL with probably be
very temporary.

Subject: advice re: A/UX vs. NFS/Share & MacX & MacTCP
I'd appreciate hearing any advice any of you have to offer regarding the
benefits of installing A/UX versus those of installing specialized
Unix connectivity products on top of the Mac OS. Right now, we only
have the need for an NFS client and X-Window server for the Mac, but it
seems like once you start purchasing those products separately, you've
spent almost as much as you would have on A/UX. I'm sure A/UX must be
a lot more tedious to install and configure, but are there any performance
advantages? We'd be running it on a IIfx (not sure how much RAM or disk
space -- I don't yet have access to the machine). Does the A/UX installation
require reformatting of the drive? Can you keep a Mac OS partition?
Generally speaking, how bad are the compatibility problems when trying
to run off-the-shelf Mac software under A/UX? If you prefer, send responses
to me and I'll summarize for the net. Thanks a lot.

Is there a decompressor as described above? As I receive so much e-mail it
should be easy to read a zipped up e-mail package after downloading it to my

MB) whereas on my Mac I can use the whole hard drive if I wanted to. Any good

I have tried Unzip 2.01, and StuffIt Expander 3.0.1

Yes, I also have noticed a similar problem ever since I got my IIsi (9
MB, 7.0.1 tuned, no math coprocessor). Sometimes it'll get into a state
where there's multi-megs of memory in the "largest unused block", and
the system complains about not enough memory to open an application, or
sometimes just to open a new window. I haven't tried quitting ALL
applications; normally I just restart. Sorry, but I haven't been able
to find anything out it either, but you're not alone!

I have noticed this problem for quite some time. In the past I
contributed
the problem to software installed with my ethernet card, since the
software
has been removed and the problem still persists I don't know what to do.
Here's the problem:
Sometimes when I quit an application the system does not know that the
memory
is available. For example, I'll run MS Word and Igor together. I only
have 5
meg of RAM so if I want to run something else I have to quit one of the
open
apps. Let's say that I quit Igor. When I go to open the new app I get
the
not enough memory error message. If I go to About This Macintosh... I see
that the system and MS Word are open. The total memory used is a litlle
under
4 meg, so I should have 1+ meg left. However, my mac is telling me that
there
is zero k free. If I quit Word all the memory is once again available.
Has anyone else had this problem. I don't think it's a virus. I use
gatekeeper and the latest Disenfectent.
System: Mac IIsi, 5 MB Ram, 7.0 tuned, Math co-processor.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This solution works (for the most part) but is greatly frowned upon by Apple

Subject: IIsi problem--any ideas?
Here's the set-up: IIsi, 17mgs RAM, system 7.0. A number of extensions,
none that have been added within the last few weeks.
Yesterday I opened Excel (the app itself, not an existing document) on
this machine. Then I tried to quit out of it, and it took something like
3-4 minutes to quit. In an effort to repeat this behavior I tried to open
it again, and this time it would not open. The application icon had
turned into a generic app icon--the little diamond with the pen in it.
Looking about, I noticed that some other app icons--but not all of them--
had also metamorphosed. I thought that I would run Disinfectant, but it
refused to open. I then tried Norton Disk Doctor, which ran through
five of its six checks, finding no significant problems, but froze
right before the sixth step. I had to turn the machine off to get out
of it. When it rebooted, almost all icons in sight had become generic,
including apps, extensions, documents, etc. I rebooted the machine again,
rebuilding the desktop. A couple of interesting sidelights--I had just
noticed that the 40MG HD showed 5k (yes, five kay) of available
space. After the reboot/rebuild, it showed 27MG. Turned out that
virtual memory had been running on the machine for a few weeks (it's
not my machine and I wasn't aware of it). Turned vm off, rebooted
again, rebuilt desktop again. Rebooted with extensions off. Nothing
helped. The other interesting thing is, though in the extensions
folder the extensions all show up as blank puzzle pieces, they still
exhibited the proper icon when marching across the screen on start-up.
Now everything on the machine is a generic icon, including the system
suitcase, which now shows up as a blank document. The machine still
boots up successfully, however. Obviously we're going to have to do
some reinstalling, but I would really like to know *what happened*.
Does anyone have any clues? Any similar experiences? MTIA (MANY thanks
in advance).

Is there any reasonable shareware/freeware for using the OnLocation

7.3MB, and is reputed to have both filenames and text within files
indexed, which should make searching much easier.
OnLocation itself costs about $129 retail, and about $75 from

low priority.
I don't know much about easy-view, but I wonder if the OnLocation

According to the May 1993 Compatibility Chart from Apple, "The Macintosh
II and IIx require special 4 or 16MB SIMMs. Specify your Macintosh
model when ordering. The Machintosh II requires the Macintosh II FDHD Upgrade
to use 4MB SIMMS" (which includes some new ROMs). Also, "The Macintosh II
will not start up with 4 or 16MB SIMMs in bank A. Only 1MB or 256K SIMMs
can be installed in bank A. 4 or 16MB SIMMs can be installed in bank B."
So, the maximum with 4 * 1MB SIMMs in bank A and 4 * 4MB SIMMs in bank B
is 20MBs. The system will apparently accomodate 68MBs if 4 * 16MB SIMMs are
put in bank B.
The short answer is, Yws you need the new ROMs that come with the FDHD
Upgrade!

On my machine (iisi- too many inits to name, 7.0.1-tuned), I have found
that the 3.0.2 expander works fine with stuffit archives (don't know about
older 1.5.1 files- don't have any of those anymore), but if I drag a

2. find a screwdriver that will fit the screw on the bottom side of the
keyboard or portable.
3. Open the keyboard top off
(don't touch the inside circuitry with one's oily hands any connections).
(allow no liquids to be nearby)
(find a static free surface)
4. Find Q-tips, paper clips, or a brush used to clean electric razors. Any of
these items are small enough to reach between keys.
5. NO CLEANING SOLVENTS should ever be used for this delicate task.
6. gently run your cleaning tool (mentioned in step 4) between each key, and
take your time. If at all possible put the keyboard at eye level and look
down the canyons underneath the keys, with the other end of the canyons
pointed at a light source. Check for dust this way while cleaning. The whole
process takes easily
2 hours, but it can easily refresh your keyboard for a month's more of work.
----
The other possibility is that your program may have a keyboard buffer that has
overflowed. About the only thing that I can recommend is to type slower in
this instance. BTW PrintMonitor will slow down the response time to typing
when on (for all the people asking about why spooling on the Stylewriter
series appears to be slow).
Keyboards are as important as mice, and as a person who moved from IBM to Mac
they still are quite important. For those people who do clean regularly and
still have stuck keys, I highly recommend contacting the manufacturer of your
keyboard for a replacement.
Disclaimer: Paper clips are not recommended unless you are certain that you
can avoid scratching the keyboard bottom and contacts of the keys with the
bottom. If the above advice is followed carefully, your problems should
decrease. But I make no guarantees.
Sincerely,

Subject: Key quirks--Round 2
Recently, a number of submissions have discussed the problem of repeating o's
when typing. I have had something different happen quite often (on an extended
keyboard): when I type (or at least intend to type) the combination 'th', I
get
an 'm' instead. For example, when I try to type 'the', I get 'me' instead. It
only happens when I'm typing quickly, of course, and I'm never able to catch
myself. I don't THINK I could be typing an 'm' instead of a 'th', but I'm not
prepared to swear to it. I haven't found any other key combination that I
mis-type anywhere nearly as consistently, but perhaps that's more due to the
frequency with which 'th' appears as a combination in English than anything
else.
Has anyone else experienced a similar phenomenon?

Subject: MacOS Bugs and workarounds
I recently ran into two Toolbox bugs that are potentially deadly. I thought
some people would appreciate hearing about them so they can avoid pulling
their hair like I did.
The first one is QuickDraw offscreens bug. It tends to show up as a hang
inside _ITabMatch in the ROM while writing to or creating a GWorld; it
seems to be relatively unpredictable. After a bit of digging in the ROM
I found the following:
- When NewGWorld is asked to allocate a clut-based GWorld, it scans all
GDevices in the deviceList (independently of whether the noNewDevice
flag is set or not). If it finds a device whose inverse table
matches the desired clut, it uses that instead of creating its own.
- When direct devices are allocated by the system, they get 2-byte long
zero-filled handles as inverse tables. Now what seems to happen
is that by sheer coincidence it can happen that the two bytes
following the block used by the dummy itable are something
relatively dangerous: if they contained, for example 0x0008,
a careless onlooker (like NewGWorld) would look at the dummy inverse
table and conclude that it is an inverse table for a color table
with seed 8, ie a system clut. Then NewGWorld turns around and
attempts to use what it thinks is an valid matching inverse table,
and depending on what happens to be following our dummy itable
in memory, it could hang or corrupt your offscreen image.
- The workaround seems to be to scan all installed devices and if any of
them have dummy 2 byte-long itables expand them to 4-byte long
itables and fill it with zero so it won't match anything.
The second one could be considered not a bug, but an OS limitation.
Nonetheless, it's a pretty nasty one. It seems the Control Manager code
that actually dispatches calls to control definition function is not
reentrant. That is, it dispatches by calling HLock on the CDEF, jsr'ing
to it, and then calling HUnlock. This means a CDEF cannot from within
make any calls which could result in another call to the same CDEF since
the CDEF handle would get unlocked on the way out from the inner call,
with potentially dire results. In fact, this even implies not being able
to manipulate OTHER controls if they happen to share the same CDEF, and it
also means CDEF actionProcs and the like need to be pretty anal about who
they call and when.
The way I was thinking of working around this one (Skanky Hack Alert) was
to patch HUnLock, NewControl, GetNewControl, and DisposHandle. The NewControl
and GetNewControl patches would notify the HUnlock patch of new CDEF handles
being loaded, the HUnlock patch would cross-check any handle passed to it
with the CDEF handles that it had received from Get/NewControl, and the
DisposHandle patch would notify the HUnlock patch if a handle in the
CDEF list got disposed of. Now, this ain't pretty, but it seems to me
it would work. The question is, has anyone dealt with this problem before,
and what workaround did you use? I would rather avoid SkankyHacks(tm), but
unless a mo' better solution comes its way, I think this will have to be it.
Ideas, comments, etc., are welcome.

Subject: Miscellany
Over the past couple days I've gleaned some tidbits of wisdom(?) that
some of y'all might find useful:
1. Apple ProDOS Extension: I've successfully used the extension to read
ProDOS 800K floppies. This evening my wife asked me to copy some
pictures (originally Macintosh saved from DeBabelizer in Apple II
single hi-res 8-color format) to a ProDOS 5.25" disk. Are we talking
archaic or what? I dragged the files to a ProDOS 3.5" disk. And died.
My venerable Apple ///, whose 5.25" and 3.5" drives have the same
format as Apple ProDOS, refused to copy the files from the 3.5" disk.
I disabled the ProDOS extension and used AFE's "default" translation
to copy the DeBabelized files to a 3.5" ProDOS disk. That worked.
No, I don't know why the ProDOS Extension yielded junk. Yes, it is
depressing that the execrable Apple File Exchange worked.
2. DC Buildings & Monuments: Last week I asked about pictures for a
project Leslye is working on re the US government. Peter Jorgensen
pointed me to an archive at the University of North Carolina with
some nice photos from the Smithsonian Institution. When I checked
with the Smithsonian's Jim Wallace about copyright, he noted that
they now have their own anonymous ftp site (photo1.si.edu) with
lots more pictures than the UNC site. Jim is right. Lots more stuff
and some really gorgeous snapshots in images/gif. The JFIF and JPEG
directories aren't as well fleshed out. It is apparently a work in
progress. It is a definite purr to snoop through that site.
3. 1984: One of the demo machines at our university bookstore has the
QuickTime movie of the original "1984" Macintosh commercial. With
the manager's permission, I copied it this morning -- onto 10 HD
floppies. I don't normally care for QuickTime. It is a tad resource
intensive. But this is a classic. If you can find a copy, I recommend
it highly. Granted, I'm easily impressed. But Leslye, the graphics
phreaque, just went "Duhhh!" as she watched it, and I believe a tear
came to her eye. It is a great selling point for multimedia.
4. 32-bit Extension: Remember how I allowed the other day that I finally
got the 32-bit extension working on my DayStar-goosed IIcx? And that
I wasn't wild about having to disable a valued SAM check to get 32b
past SAM's startup checks? I wrote too soon. The next re-boot crapped
out. I had to shift-boot and disable 32b before I could do a normal
boot. Back to Mode32.
I got a note today recalling a MacWeek article saying that only 32b
worked reliably on an SE/30. OK, I can accept that. My note of the
other day simply objected to the blanket condemnation of Connectix's
excellent Mode32. Sometimes Mode32 is the only solution.

Does anyone out there plan on actually buying a Newton ?? After reading the
article on it in MacWeek (7/19) I find myself trying to think up ANY realistic
use for it (besides an expensive paper weight). As a novelty item it ranks
up there with the best but for real business uses I'm at a loss as to what its
real advantage is over a Franklin Planner or DayTimers organizer. It costs
over 10 times as much, has a small writing/drawing area and needs batteries.
The modem option seems pretty useless. You can't log on to a dialup service
(no keyboard) and would you really want to send a fax that looked like you
used a crayon to create it ? If anyone out there has more insight into the
Newton could you please share it with us ? I have a strong feeling the Newton
will turn out to be little more than a very expensive 'Game Boy'.

I have ordered SCSI devices from a variety of vendors, and they all seem
willing to substitute daisy chain for system cables if I _ask_ . I don't
know if catalog outfits are so accomodating, but they ought to be, since
most of them sell SCSI cable separately. Anyway, try asking - if they do
it, you're in fat city, and if they don't, add $40-60 to the price they're
quoting (the usual cost of a new cable) and see if it's still the place
you want to do business!

Try looking in the doghouse - near the frisbee, covered with toothmarks.
And while I'm at it, how about an unsolicited plug for APS, who sold me
a couple of SyQuest drives and gave me killer pricing on additional (small)
quantities of daisy chain cables.

Subject: Personal AppleShare crapped out - Why?
I've seen some posting that seem related to this problem, but none of the
proposed solutions worked, so here goes:
I'm running s7.0.1 on four Mac's. I just yesterday tried to mount one of the
Mac's shared volumes on another Mac (both IIci's), and I got thru all the
usual steps in the chooser, but as soon as I hit the OK button to actually
mount it, the dialog box disappeared, the chooser window contents which were
hidden didn't update, and the machine was essentially dead, but the mouse
still moved. Force quit displayed a dialog that wouldn't force quit, so I
had to restart.
I tried accessing the suspect machine from the other machines, and they
mount its' shared volumes fine. So I can go in, but not out. It doesn't seem
to
matter whether I leave the terminating resistor in or out of the phonenet
connector, either.
What gives? No new inits or whatnot since the last time it worked properly
(as far as I can tell - who knows who screws with the machines when I'm not
looking). Any ideas?

The issue is that with System 7 (& 7.1)'s Virtual Memory, it's possible
for asynchronous, unrelated SCSI requests to occur. Thus the driver
must be reentrant, which the System 6 and before is not.
I'd try FWB's Hard Drive Toolkit. It supports most drives; ask your
favorite vendor if yours is covered.

Subject: teaching old Macs new tricks: Plus and Sys6 (Q)
Howdy pardners!
A professor here has a Mac Plus (2.5M RAM) with an external Apple HardDisk
20SC
that he wanted to upgrade from its original System (no version on Get Info) to
System 6.0.8. During the first attempt to install the new system, 'bad things'
happened. The installer bombed halfway through, and later we discovered disk
problems with Disk First Aid. This produced sad mac boots with various
numbers,
the last of which were in hex (he didn't write them down). Not trusting such
an
old hard disk, I attached it to our Quadra 800 and initialized it with Apple
HD
SC Setup, first with the latest version (7.1.1), then with the System 6.0.8
version (I was afraid of compatibility problems with 7.1.1). The driver was
updated automatically in both cases. Since the installer wouldn't let the
Quadra
install System 6.0.8 on the 20SC, I had to bring it over to a Mac II (I didn't
use the Plus itself because we didn't have a SCSI terminator at the time, and
the only Mac that wouldn't work w/o the terminator was the Plus). Installation
was successful, as proven by the Mac II booting from the external HD. End of
story...NOT!
With the proper SCSI termination, the Plus was able to boot from the HD. Now
the
problem is this: when trying to open the HD icon, the Plus reports an 'address
error' of some sort. I wanted to try to initialize the HD with the software
that
came with it, but (of course) the disks are no where to be found. Any ideas as
to why this setup won't work? Will the Plus only work with an earlier version
of
6.0.x? Is there a ROM upgrade necessary?
TIA for your help!

Subject: Viruses...a summation(?)
First off...thanks to ALL people who replied to my 'plea' for help.
Got over 30 replies, and I apologize for not responding to all of you. The
most common suggestion was
to read the online help in Disinfectant 3.2( done! ). 9 people mentioned this(
sheepish grin ). As
to how to detect/suspect a virus/infection, here goes...
1. Differences in normal system activity( this still goes along with
developing a 6th sense I guess ).
2. System slowdown.
3. Disappearing disk space.
4. Frequent system crashes.
5. Programs beeping at startup time( when they had not previously
done so ).
6. Files losing their icons.
7. Unexplained disk activity.
It seems as if Gatekeeper should be used when a new user becomes more
familar with the Mac, since 'biz
zare' or arcane programs might tend to set it off. Installing the Disinfectant
init/extension is recco
mended( by the replies I got :) ).
One thing I hadn't thought of was putting a copy of Disnfectant on a bootable
floppy!
The general impression I got is that viruses in the Mac world aren't
all that common. With a wee bit of
common sense, they should be no trouble( more than a few people mentioned this
).
Thanks to *all* replies.
